Tiny, Little Pinchers!

Things have been a normal level of crazy since we last chatted. Which is nice compared to the mind-splattering speed life has been moving all summer.

Right after the last post, Lisa and I wen to Uncle Simon's birthday celebration sans kids. We went to dinner at a nice Italian joint. I still find it strange to have the time to read a menu or eat without shoveling food into my mouth (or a toddler's). And as nice as it was, it was kinda...too easy. There was no challenge and thus, far less of an accomplished feeling when finished. Not complaining though -- a simple meal here and there is welcomed. Afterward, the group hit the San Jose Improv comedy club. I loved it. I'm not sure why we don't go more often (fine, I can name two small reasons, but independent of them -- it is such a fun experience).

The next day, the Infelise family trekked down from the East Bay and the kids played while we enjoyed pastries and some much needed catch up time with them. For lunch, we walked to Central Park and hit the annual Santa Clara Art & Wine festival. We hit up the kids' arts and crafts pavilion and got some tickets for the kiddo rides, including the much anticipated choo-choo train (though, making parents ride the train AND pay for it at $3 was a touch annoying -- luckily there was enough alcohol handy to keep me off the edge). Both kids were so tuckered out, they zonked out on the long, hot walk home.

On our way home, we ran into Alison and baby O...who went from the smallest baby I'd ever seen into a normal, good sized baby in just two months. As always, it was great to hang out with Alison and really get to meet baby O. After they left, we had a couple hours to get the house ready in time for the Pilgerams to come over for dinner. Another great time catching up and drinking wine (there was a definite theme to the day). It was a fun day of visiting, but bed -- and quiet -- felt amazing. Like any true Santa Clarans, we hit up the Art & Wine again on Sunday...though we mostly focused on the booths than the kid's zone.

This past weekend was slightly less booked. We did manage to get the children into JC Penney's for J's 6 month pictures. I have a deep appreciation for those photographers. Getting two small kids to look at the camera AND smile all at the same time is truly a feat. Lisa and I felt like we'd run a 10k...and won a medal: No meltdowns and four shots selected. That night, we went to Sweet Tomatoes with the Balyons and afterward, found a strip of lawn outside the restaurant that was 25-ish yards long, a few yards wide and 95% enclosed by a hedge. The boys raced back and forth while the grown ups stood at the entrance and laughed at their wild, contained antics. If there'd been a potty nearby, we may have never left.

J is still grow-grow-growing. She's definitely got some Christensen DNA...just by seeing the yoga backbends she gets herself into. Also, her rolling skills are getting better and now when I set her down on the floor, half the time she's almost across the room by the time I look up. She tried out her first baby gym class the other day and while she was the youngest in there, she had the best time watching the slightly older babies crawl around. And Lisa said that J was so attentive to the teacher, just as E was back at her age.

E is getting funnier and funnier. The other day he said, "Mommy, you're really big." At which Lisa responded, "Excuse me?" Immediately, he said, "Mommy, you're tiny little." Lisa: "Nice recovery." Already, he's experimenting with what he can and cannot say to a woman. And how to get his foot out of his own mouth. Smart of him to start while he's cute.

Another thing recently: We were driving and he was talking about cookies, gold fish crackers, and "Pinchers." For the life of me, I could not understand what he meant and so I kept asking him, "What?" Finally, he sighed and said, "Daddy, I can't say that word." (Later, I got Lisa to translate for me...turns out that "pinchers" are actually "pretzels.") Still, he kills me.
